Cleveland Public Library - Glenville Campus
Project location
Cleveland, OH
Project phase
Approved
Cleveland Public Library is transforming Glenville Branch into a vibrant, fully renovated community library. Glenville Branch will be a library of the future that respects the history of the building and the neighborhood.
FACILITIES MASTER PLAN - FUTURE VISION
It is recommended that this branch be renovated to modernize and make better use of the space. A small addition at the north face could push the entry closer to the St Clair and create a more welcoming presence at the street edge. As the entry is reconfigured consideration should be given to whether the existing mezzanine should be made accessible for limited use with a new stair or removed to take full advantage of the volume of the lobby space. There is no space to expand parking on site but the library may consider pursuing a shared parking agreement with the church lot across St Clair and working with the city to add a cross walk to facilitate access.
DIGITAL INNOVATION CENTER
With generous support from the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Foundation, the Glenville Branch with feature a digital innovation center. The digital innovation center, which will be known as the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Workforce and Senior Digital Innovation Lab, will serve as a creative, collaborative and educational space where Glenville residents can access software, emerging technologies, STEM education and workforce and career development opportunities. The Mandel brothers once called the Glenville neighborhood home.
The current Glenville Branch was planned in 1978 as a new building that combined the Glenville and Arlington branch libraries. Architect T.K. Zung, a native of Shanghai, China, designed the branch.
FACILITIES MASTER PLAN - CURRENT STATE
The Glenville branch is located on an active portion of St Clair and uses its site efficiently. However, the exterior of the building is perceived as unwelcoming and the deeply recessed entry does not provide a presence at the street. The building is on a single story and is one of the larger branches in the system but the current layout leaves a significant amount of space underutilized. Parking is limited on site but there is little opportunity to expand and no adjacent lots to consider for acquisition.
